I am unemployed and have not had health insurance for several years. I get my primary care from a free clinic which has a limited range of what they can treat, and certainly cannot offer any high level of care, or long-term care for a serious illness.
I was diagnosed several years ago with a condition which can, over time, lead to cancer. The symptoms are worsening and persistent. I feel an urgency to schedule some tests. Of course, I’m worried about a serious illness, but equally worried about being able to find treatment, and pay for it.
I may possibly be able afford individual health insurance once I start an upcoming contract project. No insurance will be provided since I’ll be a contractor, but the income would be enough to start an individual insurance policy.
Would it be best to try to secure the insurance first, and then get the necessary tests? Or use some of the new income to get the tests, and then see about insurance? I’m not sure how any of this would rate in the area of ‘pre-existing conditions’. I have a diagnosed condition which CAN lead to cancer, but certainly have never been diagnosed with cancer. I also haven’t had the condition checked in-depth in several years.
So, I’d love any advice on making good choices when obtaining individual insurance. Once I have insurance will I need to wait a year (to cover the pre-existing condition waiting period) before I get tested?
There is a lot to consider here, and it would be great to get some thoughtful feedback from people who have some experience with managing their own health insurance, and health care. Input from someone in the health-care and insurance industries would be especially helpful. Thank you all so much.
Since you have a preexisting condition it is pretty unlikely that you will be able to find a individual insurance company to cover you. If you try to omit the condition or lie about it and they find out later they will cancel your policy. Insurance companies do not care about people’s health, they care about profits. This is horribly sad but true (watch Sicko to be disgusted). You should still try to pursue this if you have the time. There may be a company out there that will take you. It is in your best interest to look now, before anything worsens or you need more treatment/ tests. The more sick you are the less likely an insurance company will take you on.
I would suggest trying to find employment. I know this may be difficult at this time. Most work based insurance plans can not deny based on preexisting conditions. I know that Target offers their employees pretty decent health insurance, and retail always seems to be hiring.
